Indigenous peoples have inhabited the Americas for thousands of years. Beginning in 1607, British colonization led to the establishment of the Thirteen Colonies in what is now the eastern United States. These colonies clashed with the British Crown over taxes and political representation, leading to the American Revolution and subsequent war. The United States declared its independence on July 4, 1776, becoming the first nation-state founded on Enlightenment principles: inalienable natural rights, consent of the governed, and liberal democracy.
During the 19th century, the political philosophy of the United States was influenced by the concept of manifest destiny, as the country expanded across the continent in a series of wars, land purchases, and treaties, eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean. The division of the country over slavery led to the secession of the Confederate States of America, which fought against the remaining states of the Union during the American Civil War (1861–1865). With the victory and preservation of the Union, slavery was abolished nationally by the Thirteenth Amendment.
By 1900, the United States had established itself as a great power, becoming the largest economy in the world. After Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States entered World War II on the side of the Allies. The aftermath of the war left the United States and the Soviet Union as the world’s two superpowers and led to the Cold War. During it, both countries became involved in a struggle for ideological dominance but avoided direct military conflict. They also competed in the space race, which culminated in the landing of Apollo 11 in 1969, making the US the first and so far only nation to land humans on the Moon. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent end of the Cold War in 1991, the United States emerged as the world’s sole superpower.

The Atlantic Coastal Plain

Finally, at the western edge of the continent, is the Pacific Coast Range. This includes the coastal mountains along the Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to California. This range also encompasses several active volcanoes and the famous coastal areas of California.

Lying further north from the Pacific Coast Range is the Alaska Range. This region hosts Mount Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, which, at 20,000 feet, is the highest point in the United States.

The Mississippi River, one of the longest in the world, flows south from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, effectively dividing the country into eastern and western halves. The Colorado River, famous for shaping the Grand Canyon, also makes a significant contribution to the landscape of the Southwest.
