Nestled amid the Appalachian Mountains of eastern West Virginia lies the small mountain town of Davis. Located in the heart of Tucker County, Davis exudes a sort of rustic charm with its quaint coffee shops, restaurants, and breweries surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas and peaceful forests. Davis offers a treasure trove of experiences for outdoor enthusiasts and leisure seekers alike!

One of the most enticing aspects of Davis is its proximity to a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. The closest, and most popular, option just a few miles out of town is Blackwater Falls State Park. Here, you’ll find one of the most photographed places in the state and a well-traveled stop on West Virginia’s official Waterfall Trail: the majestic 57-foot Blackwater Falls! What’s better is that there are multiple viewpoints, including a handicap accessible route, so anyone can admire this beautiful waterfall.

Beyond this central feature of the park are miles of serene hiking trails to (more) waterfalls, rock formations, and mountain overlooks (like Elakala Falls, Balanced Rock and Lindy Point). Don’t worry, there are also plenty of great views with no hiking required for those who prefer a slower scenic drive (try Pendleton Point). Just outside the park, those with AWD vehicles can explore the more secluded Albert, Douglas and Kennedy Falls.

For someone craving even more adventure, there is nearby Canaan Valley Resort State Park. This outdoor enthusiast’s paradise offers a plethora of different activities, including skiing and snowboarding in the winter months, and hiking, mountain biking, and golfing during the warmer seasons. The expansive Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge provides a sanctuary for diverse plant life, inviting you to get “lost” in its pristine wilderness.

The fall foliage in Canaan is among the most vibrant in the country, so a scenic chairlift ride is a must during the fall season!

For those willing to venture a little farther into West Virginia’s rugged wilderness, there are plenty of incredible places within an hour’s drive of Davis, such as Dolly Sods Wilderness (a rugged and remote expanse of high-elevation plateau located within the Monongahela National Forest), Seneca Rocks (a stunning formation of Tuscarora quartzite jutting nearly 900 feet above the surrounding landscape), Northfork Mountain, and Spruce Knob (the highest point in the state).

After a day of exploration, visitors can cozy up and unwind at one of the many coffee shops, restaurants or breweries in downtown Davis. The smell of freshly roasted coffee will greet you at local favorites like Milo’s Café and Trailhead Coffee Shop, where you can grab a steaming cup of java and a wholesome breakfast made from locally sourced ingredients. There is generally a wide array of local cuisine for every preference, including Hellbender Burritos (known for their mega BIG and tasty burrito combinations), Sirianni’s Café (an Italian joint that models its pizza after the famous Pizzeria Regina in Boston) and Wicked Wilderness Pub (serving up a wide variety of pub fare and craft brews).

Speaking of craft brews, Stumptown Ales has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere and an impressive selection of handcrafted beers brewed on-site. Whether you sip a crisp IPA on the outdoor patio or sample a flight of seasonal brews, you’ll definitely feel the passion and craftsmanship that goes into every pint.

Beyond its own borders, Davis is an ideal home base for exploring West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. From the rugged beauty of Dolly Sods Wilderness to the charming town of Thomas with its vibrant arts scene, there’s no shortage of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Whether taking a scenic hike, enjoying a locally brewed beer, or simply soaking in the natural beauty of the Appalachians, Davis offers an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking solace in the mountains!
