Genetic ancestry involved in clinical manifestations

The study thus analyzes the genetic data of more than 1.4 million participants from different ancestral genetic origins (African-American, Asian, European, South Asian and multi-ancestry…) and identifies different genetic clusters involved in a wide range of mechanisms biological elements that help explain differences in the clinical presentations of type 2 diabetes, according to genetic ancestry:

  • 650 genetic variants are identified that show independent associations with type 2 diabetes;
  • these same variants are correlated with 110 traits or clinical manifestations linked to diabetes;
  • genetic clusters characterized by groups of variants are also identified, which share a biological function involved in the disease;
  • new genetic groups linked to decreased cholesterol levels, abnormal metabolism of bilirubin (produced when the body breaks down hemoglobin in red blood cells), and abnormal lipid processing in adipose and liver tissues are also identified ;
  • 12 genetic groups and their biological functions are specifically associated with type 2 diabetes, with these groups helping to explain differences in the clinical manifestations of type 2 diabetes among different populations.

Thus the clinical disparities of the disease are explained at least in part by genetic variations involved in the way the body uses and stores fat, which also explains the relationship between a high BMI and a high risk of diabetes.
