Exploring Nanjing: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Memories

The last time I was in Nanjing was in 1987, 36 years ago. My friends in Nanjing didn’t believe it when I told them. I told them that that time in Nanjing, I met the premiere of the movie “Red Sorghum” in Nanjing. After watching the movie, I met the director Zhang Yimou. Over a late-night snack, when he was still not popular, a table of Hong Kong people met him for the first time. They liked his movies and thought he had quite a personality. What year did you say this happened?

It takes 3 hours to get to Nanjing from Kunshan. It was getting late when we drove into the city. We first went to have dinner on the brightly lit Qinhuai River, and then walked around the Confucius Temple. It’s so lively there. It was a place where people looked for flowers and willows in ancient times. Now it’s also a tourist attraction at night. Red lanterns are everywhere, some on land and some on cruise ships. The river surface reflects the sparkling colors. Tourists on the bridges on the shore are like crucian carp. There are many people walking on the river. Girls in period costumes floated around posing for photos, some were ecstatic, some were frightening, and they were all very narcissistic. Next to it are people selling salted duck, salted duck, duck blood soup and sweet-scented osmanthus wine, attracting tourists from all over. The Confucius Temple is also brightly lit. There are two big pillars next to the door. One pillar reads “The prophet will stand for eternity forever”, and the other pillar reads “The most sincere and holy people are in the same flow as the rain.” Of course he is talking about Confucius, and it has nothing to do with the people queuing up to buy salted duck in front of “Zhu’s Duck Shop” today.

After visiting the Qinhuai River downtown area, we got on the bus and crossed the river to the Hualuxe Hotel on the other side. HUALUXE is a famous brand of the InterContinental Hotels Group. General Manager Tommy is an old friend. He was waiting in the lobby early in the morning and was very happy to meet him. It was a cold evening. When I was watching women in ancient costumes by the Qinhuai River, I felt the cold wind whistling behind my neck. I felt uneasy. After entering the guest room, I immediately put a bathtub of hot water and lay down in it. The cold air forced out and I was dripping with sweat. Only then did I come back to my senses. Come, sleep until the sun shines on the bedside. Looking out the window, there is a thin mist in the sky, and the only thing I can see is the Yangtze River flowing in the sky. Now we have arrived in Nanjing.
