The notion of madness remains vague, because the apparent evidence of the clinical signs which make it possible to identify it in no way implies the certainty of the diagnosis. This is why it could be the object of all the disputes, within psychiatry as much as outside it. The list of causes that have been suggested over the centuries is almost endless and not always convincing: the Devil’s hold on the imagination; excess of poetry within the nervous system; poor brain functioning; partly hereditary pathology; dysregulation of cognition; consequence of an existential misfortune; social deviance; conflict within the psyche itself…
But failing to understand the mechanisms of the onset of madness, we can try to classify its various manifestations by observing them pragmatically, as we do for other illnesses. Problem: here again, the matter does not seem simple.
