A submarine that usually transports tourists to see the wreckage of the Titanic has disappeared off the US east coast, triggering a rescue operation, the Boston Coast Guard told the BBC.

The OceanGate company, which operates these expeditions, confirmed that it is a submersible. “We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely,” she said in a statement published by the BBC, in which he did not specify how many people were on board.

“All our attention is focused on the crew of the submersible and their families,” they added. “We are working so that the crew members return safely,” she added.

Several companies organize multi-day trips to see the remains of the Titanic, which is located at a depth of about 3,800 meters and at a distance of about 640 kilometers from the Canadian island of Newfoundland.

OceanGate Expeditions had recently announced on its website and social networks that an expedition to go see the remains of the Titanic “was underway”.

As the company promotes, the trip in its carbon fiber submersible is “an opportunity to get out of everyday life and discover something truly extraordinary.”

On June 14, the company said on Twitter that it was using the communications company Starlink to keep the line of communication open with the expedition heading to the Titanic.

On the company’s website, seven-day voyages to see the wreckage of the Titanic are advertised for about $250,000. It lasts approximately eight hours: two and a half hours down, three hours on the seabed and another two and a half hours up.

OceanGate’s Titan model, with the capacity to submerge to 4,000 meters, can carry four people plus the pilot and, with that number of people, it can be up to 96 hours underwater.

The Titanic was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City when it struck an iceberg off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912. The luxury liner sank within hours, an accident that claimed the lives of about 1,500 people.

The remains were not located until more than seven decades later, in 1985.

They are divided into two parts, with the bow and stern separated by about 800 meters from each other. In the middle and around it is a huge field of debris from the shipwreck.
