While we all have our heads full in the Playoffs, the NBA continues to work on setting up its In-Season Tournament, which will normally make its big debut next season. Several details have fallen in recent days regarding the operation of this tournament, so we wanted to take stock.

How will the NBA manage to set up a tournament in the middle of the regular season? Does that mean teams will play more than 82 games? What interest for the players?

These are the questions that come up most often about the In-Season tournament, questions to which we can now provide answers. After the first details provided at the beginning of April when the new collective agreement (CBA) was announced, Ben Rohrbach of Yahoo Sports comes with new details regarding the operation of this competition.

  • The 30 teams will be divided into 6 pools of five, with 3 pools per conference. Pools will normally be different from the usual divisions.
  • Each team will play 4 group games (two at home and two away) during the first six weeks of the regular season. As a reminder, these games will count for both regular season standings et for the In-Season Tournament. Double challenge therefore.
  • The winners of each group (6 teams therefore) qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament, along with the 2 best runners-up.
  • The 8 qualified teams will play a knockout tournament, with a Final Four in a neutral room. It should take place at the beginning of December.
  • In its pre-season schedule, the NBA will schedule 80 games per team. As mentioned above, the pool matches of the In-Season Tournament are part of this total. Quarter-final and semi-final matches will also count towards the regular season. This means that the teams that lose in the semi will have 82 games on the clock, while those that lose in the quarter will stop at 81, and all the others (thus not qualified for the final phase of the In-Season Tournament) at 80. NBA will then add games to these teams so that they all reach the 82 mark.
  • To summarize, everyone will play 82 games in the season, except the finalists of the In-Season Tournament who will play 83. The final will not count in the final classification of the regular season.

Regarding the awards for the winners, Adrian Wojnarowski ofESPN provided some clarification.

Players from the champion team will earn $500,000 per head. The players of the finalist team will walk away with 200,000 dollars, 100,000 for the semi-finalists, and 50,000 for the quarter-finalists.

Enough as a source of motivation?
