Exploring the Rise of William Trudeau: A Hidden Gem on the CH Blue Line

When we think of the best prospects on the CH blue line, it’s often the same names that come up. Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj, Justin Barron, David Reinbacher, Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux and so on: there is enormously good young defensemen in the organization.

However, despite everything, there are others who go somewhat under the radar. Among the lot, there is William Trudeau, who was drafted in the fourth round during the 2021 draft. That’s Mailloux’s.

Obviously, fourth-round picks don’t always make headlines, but in Trudeau’s case, we can look at what’s happened with him in recent months and wonder why he continues to remain silent: his end season in Laval last year as well as his current situation at rookie camp demonstrate that he has the respect of the organization.

Tonight, for example, he will be paired with a certain David Reinbacher on the first pair of defenders. He plays a mentoring role with the Austrian during this camp.

And if we look at the last season, we realize that Trudeau gained a lot of points in Laval. We’re talking about a guy who, at 20 years old, played big minutes on the first pair of defensemen for the Laval Rocket, even though he hardly played in the first half of the season, as Mathias Brunet noted on the airwaves of BPM Sports this week.

With playing time came production, moreover: in his last 36 games, he amassed no less than 24 points. Once again, we are talking here about a 20-year-old defender who played professionally and who quickly gained the trust of Jean-François Houle.

At the start of the season, I expect to see Trudeau continue to play big minutes in Laval. In fact, the congestion among left-handed defenders in Montreal means that it will be difficult for him to carve out a position.

I can’t see him overtaking Mike Matheson, Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris and Arber Xhekaj in the hierarchy from training camp.

However, if injuries ever start to hit the club, Trudeau will have to earn consideration among the first recalled. If he starts in Laval, Justin Barron will probably be the first recalled among the right-handed defenders, but among the left-handers, it is Trudeau who will be in the same situation.

He’s a lot closer to the NHL than guys like Mattias Norlinder and Jayden Struble right now.

A right-handed recall is much more likely, sure, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Trudeau playing in the NHL this season. If he continues to be dominant in the AHL and the guys in front of him were to go down in battle, he risks forcing Kent Hughes’ hand.

And if he gets his chance, it will be a great story for a little guy from our country drafted in the fourth round.

A lot of

– This will be continued. Remember that colleague Maxime Truman had released the story exclusively earlier this week.

– Pierre LeBrun persists and signs: Yaroslav Askarov was offered to CH during the last draft.

– With reason.

– Holy Travis.

– The dismissal of Chaim Bloom continues to cause discussion in Boston.
