Wallonia is also an economic situation that does not only show good news. L’Echo relayed in recent days a study by the firm EY which estimated the year 2022 as the worst year in terms of foreign investment in 10 years for Wallonia. “There is a decline in the number of investmentsadmet Elio Di Rupo, but that’s not enough information. Last year, we increased the number of jobs by 1,634, which I find more important.“ The EY report indeed confirms 19 fewer successful foreign projects in Wallonia in 2022 compared to 2021, but a higher number of jobs created thanks to these investments.

Elio Di Rupo also defends himself on the Walloon debt which has doubled in four years, from 23 to 44 billion euros. “The Covid, we did not invent it. Floods, we didn’t invent them. It cost us 10 billion and we had to borrow it to help our fellow citizens.“This increase in debt is therefore not a sign of bad management, according to the Walloon Minister-President.”The debt is bearable, we have taken measures, the government is saving money, we reduced the deficit during the budgetary control a few weeks ago and we are heading towards a balanced budget in 2024. The budgetary situation is difficult but mastered.“
The former PS president did not comment much on Bart De Wever’s foot call for a PS-N-VA mini-cabinet to be formed after the 2024 elections.”From experience, a year before the elections, we become nervous and everyone goes there with their proposals. The N-VA must not be happy compared to its immediate competitor Vlaams Belang. We took note, we responded to it, but let’s wait for the elections, the results and then work.“
Elio Di Rupo has also confirmed his personal desire to be on a list in 2024, but that the choice of the list had not yet been made.
