An explosion took place around Green Square (Groenplaats) in the center of Antwerp during the night from Sunday to Monday, confirmed local police spokesperson Wouter Bruyns, without providing details. The context of the incident is under investigation, but a link with drug trafficking cannot be ruled out.

The police established a security perimeter. An expert laboratory and mine clearance services are on site.

The streets of Antwerp are regularly the scene of explosions linked to drug trafficking in the port city.

A recent study by the Flemish Peace Institute, and commissioned by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), shows that Belgium and the Netherlands play a central role in the problem of armed violence linked to trade drugs, while the center of gravity of this trafficking has moved from the Iberian Peninsula to Antwerp and Rotterdam.
