California prosecutors in the United States filed charges against Ippe Mizuhara, the personal interpreter of Shohei Ohtani, a famous Japanese baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, on April 11. Stealing Otani’s money worth millions of dollars.

State prosecutor Martin Estrada said Mizuhara posed as Otani. Take the famous baseball player’s money and place bets on sports betting. He then posed as Otani and transferred money from the bank to an account owned by him. This was repeated between November 2021 and January 2024, for a total of US$16 million (576 million baht).

After the scandal, Mizuhara, 39, was fired last month. In the past, he acted as both an interpreter and personal manager for Otani. Taking advantage of Otani’s inability to speak English, however, the baseball star denied that Mizuhara had ever been involved in his financial accounts.

For bank fraud cases, the maximum penalty is 30 years in prison, which US media reported. Mizuhara tried to negotiate a reduced sentence with prosecutors. Meanwhile, sports betting is legal in 38 US states. But it is illegal in the state of California.
