Fabien Roussel to Run as Autonomous Communist Candidate in 2027 French Presidential Election

Fabien Roussel confirmed his intention to pursue an autonomous presidential candidacy for 2027, setting up a sharp left-wing clash over strategy following an internal vote by party militants.

Inside the 40th Congress of the PCF

At the 40th Congress of the French Communist Party (PCF) held in early July in Lille, delegates and members debated the direction of the party for the upcoming electoral cycle.

The party’s outgoing leadership proposed an independent run, which was subsequently endorsed by 61 % of party militants who adopted the orientation text. Fabien Roussel, who has led the PCF since 2018 and ran his first presidential campaign in 2022, stated his readiness to lead the charge once again, declaring to Le Parisien that he has an "appetite for these combats."

The Strategic Split on the Left

The decision to forge an independent path has laid bare deep divisions within the PCF regarding how to position the party against both Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Insoumise (LFI) and potential social-liberal or social-democratic contenders like Raphaël Glucksmann.

Roussel has also rejected participation in a primary organized by the leadership of the PS and the écolos.

Pushback From Parliamentary Leadership

This strategy faces pushback from internal opponents who argue that the party risks marginalization.

Peu emphasized that after losing representation in the European Parliament, the party’s primary focus should be retaining its parliamentary group in the National Assembly. Peu’s alternative motion—which received roughly 25 % of the vote—advocated for a legislative agreement around a platform of rupture and a national spokesperson rather than a standalone presidential bid that could complicate broader left-wing coalitions.

Friction Over LFI Outreach and Electoral Math

The debate coincides with persistent overtures from LFI, which has sought to consolidate left-wing forces. A senior LFI strategist noted that their camp has repeatedly offered positions in a future government, campaign integration, and legislative pacts, observing that Roussel’s line has dropped twenty points in internal support compared to 2023, when the leadership text secured 82 % approval. The friction is compounded by electoral math from 2022, when LFI fell short of the second round by 400.000 votes while Roussel garnered 800.000 ballots.

Leadership Defiance and the Road Ahead

Despite external pressure and internal dissent, the party leadership remains resolute. Léon Deffontaines, spokesperson of the PCF and a close ally of Roussel, dismissed outside influence. "Les ingérences, notamment de LFI, n’ont pas d’impact en interne, on ne se laisse pas dicter notre orientation," he stated. Deffontaines further urged nervous lawmakers to prioritize collective strength, warning that erasing core issues like labor, wages, and industry from the debate threatens the party’s legislative survival.

While the orientation text was approved in Lille, the official designation of the PCF presidential candidate is scheduled to take place at the rentrée.
