After hours spent in front of a computer or mobile phone screen, our eyes need some time out! What if you applied the 20-20-20 rule to them? It is very simple to set up…

Our eyes are not made to stare at a light source like a computer screen for hours on end, whether for professional or leisure purposes. Specialists therefore recommend taking breaks to prevent visual fatigue, characterized in particular by some well-known symptoms: blurred vision, red, itchy eyes, sometimes associated with some tension in the cervical area.

The 20-20-20 rule

The board ? Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something that is at least 20 feet away, or about 6 meters! The national association for the improvement of vision (Asnav) even adds a fourth ’20’: “ and, blink 20 times » ! And for good reason : ” when your eye is lowered, the eyelid covers it more and the eye, by blinking more often, is better irrigated », underline its representatives.

Get up and move!

Note that this rule has been the subject of several scientific studies aimed at making it more objective. The results appear mixed between some, which showed no impact on visual fatigue and work carried out by an Anglo-Spanish team published in April 2023, more nuanced: its authors clearly highlight a beneficial effect of this rule. But not without remembering that the benefits are all the more important when… the person in question is active!

In other words, if you apply the 20-20-20 rule, accompany it with the rule of getting up and moving for 4-5 minutes every 2 hours to relax. A good point for your eyes but also your heart and your vessels!
