Juan Esteves closes the cycle of debates on FACES photography at the Stickel Foundation Space

This is the third and final debate panel at FACES – 2nd Erico Stickel Art and Culture Festival, where Juan Esteves will talk about his work as a portraitist and the development of his professional career over the course of his 30 years.

All the roundtables had ‘The transforming power of art through photography’ as their topic of discussion in conversations mediated by professor, researcher and curator Rubens Fernandes Junior.

The first debate table of FACES – 2nd Erico Stickel Art and Culture Festival took place on July 24th, with the participation of award-winning photographer Edu Simões also contemporary experiences in reflections on the role of photography for people and the world around them. “Photography is not only a representation of the world, but a way of intervening in the world it represents”, the critic then said.

The debates take place at the Stickel Foundation Space, where the exhibition “The city before my eyes” features 120 photographs produced by students in the free courses offered by the Stickel Foundation.

Juan Esteves

Juan Esteves was a photojournalist and photo editor at Folha de S.Paulo, where he also wrote about photography for the Ilustrada section, notably with book reviews and exhibitions. He is the author of 9 authorial books, one of which, Flowers (2021) published in France, by Éditions Bessard.

He participates in more than 200 publications from publishers such as Penguin (England), Rizzoli (Italy), Rive Gauche (China), Editorial Crítica and Fundacíon Juan March (Spain). His photographs are at MASP, MAM (RJ and SP) MAC-USP, Pinacoteca do Estado, MAB-FAAP, Moreira Salles Institute, Oscar Niemeyer Museum, SESC Brazilian Art Collection, among others.

About the Curator

Rubens Fernandes Junior is Director and Full Professor of Communication at FAAP, researcher and independent curator of Photography. Doctor in Communication and Semiotics from PUC São Paulo, he is the author of several books, among them Deserdadas Photographs (2023); Ephemeral Roles of Photography (2015); The 19th Century in Brazilian Photography (2000); Labirinto e Identidades – Contemporary Brazilian Photography (2003) and Geraldo de Barros – Fotoformas e Sobras (2006).

As a curator, he received two APCA awards for best exhibition/curatorship for As(s)simetrias, photographs by Geraldo de Barros, Galeria Brito Cimino, São Paulo (2006) and Mario Cravo Neto Fotografia, at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (1995) . In addition to these, he received the Marc Ferrez Photography Prize (2014) and the Cultural Merit in Photography, from the Network of Cultural Photography Producers in Brazil (2020).

In September and October, hundreds of children and teenagers from public schools, associations and municipal service centers will experience photography as a tool for education, culture and social transformation at the Stickel Foundation Space.
