In a region as sunny as Paca, no one should be unaware of the risks to the skin from prolonged and repeated exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Walks, barbecues, beaches, bike rides, breaks on the terrace… So many pleasant moments which can be dangerous if we do not protect ourselves correctly, especially children. So, we slather ourselves with facial sunscreens, including those labeled index 50 and 50+. They are reassuring because they are powerful, and now available in small formats, practical for always having them with you. But are they really effective?
UFC-Que Choisir monitored the performance of 13 product ranges to verify whether they really guaranteed the expected level of protection. The results, published this Tuesday, are cause for concern: a third of those tested do not provide the level of protection displayed. “In view of the high proportion of potentially misleading labeling, UFC-Que Choisir calls on manufacturers to make their products conform to the displayed indices or, failing that, to withdraw them and reserves the possibility of taking any useful action in justice”indicates the association.
Failures
Sun creams index 50 and 50+ “are believed to provide the highest levels of protection once morest ultraviolet rays”, recalls the UFC-Que Choisir, whose tests show that “of the 13 creams tested, 5 do not meet the expected levels of sun protection”. “Four of them only achieve protection corresponding to an index 30”according to the association, which emphasizes that“it is rare” that she notices “such a proportion of failures, and that they come from brands as well anchored in the landscape as Vichy, Biotherm or Lancaster”.
The association also contacted the General Directorate for Competition and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) “so that it sanctions brands marketing such products, steps up controls on sun protection products and takes measures to put an end to these practices”
“Falsely protected”
Results that are nevertheless nuanced by Doctor Isabelle Nicol, dermatologist in Marseille. “No one puts their cream under the conditions of the test carried out, carried out in vitroshe emphasizes. A good cream protects once morest ultraviolet B rays (cIt is to them that we owe the sunburns, editor’s note) and provides at least 1/3 protection once morest UV A (responsible among other things for skin aging). On the other handpoints out the dermatologist, some manufacturers give excessive information on the labels. However, you cannot expect everything from a cream. It is only a partial protection, which cannot replace common sense measures which are to avoid exposure at times of greatest risk. Sunscreen is not meant to make you feel falsely protected.”
The healthcare professional acknowledges, for her part, that she has product preferences that she recommends, and will keep to the audience only of her patients. On the other hand, it has not accepted or distributed samples for a year and a half out of ecological conviction.
Skin cancers might constitute the most common cancer in France, indicates Public Health France. Attributable in more than 85% of cases to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV), they can be avoided through reasonable exposure from childhood. Each year, between 141,200 and 243,500 cases are diagnosed in France. In men, the number of incident cases of cutaneous melanoma increased fivefold between 1990 and 2018. In women, it increased threefold during the same period. Which places it first among cancers in terms of increased frequency.
As a reminder, there are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and skin carcinoma. The latter are the most common skin cancers. The onset of this cancer is late, almost three quarters of estimated new cases are diagnosed following the age of 49.
