Fact or fiction? The 13 keys to finding your way around the ‘1985’ series

The organization “WNP” (for “Westland New Post”) leads its armed members into the woods. It is not a fiction, it really existed. In the series, the young policeman Franky Verhellen is recruited and becomes “Bambi”. All members have a “nickname”.

In reality, the existence of the WNP came to light in September 1983 during a fight in Forest followed by gunshots. The police discovered at the home of the shooter confidential telexes stolen from NATO headquarters in Evere. They were carried away by soldiers who were members of the WNP. More worryingly, the police discover that the members communicate with coded messages.

The WNP has a security service responsible for chastising those who threaten the organization. All of them carry out shadowing and observation exercises. In episode three, we can discover that one of his exercises ends with the assassination of the couple under surveillance in Anderlecht.

This news item actually took place and is known as “the affair of the Pastoral”. The investigation will lead to an assize trial where the disturbing relations of the Commissioner of State Security, “Canard”, will reveal a possible manipulation of young activists, who fulfill their missions without knowing the real purpose. Several members of the WNP will reveal having had to carry out scouting in the car parks of department stores with a study of the timings of the various escape routes.

The main leader of the WNP, who appears in the series as the “Marshal” will be found hanged at his home in strange conditions. A suicide will eventually conclude justice. Constable Madani Bouhouche, who is seen meeting with the members of the group, is said to have been recruited by the organization. To validate his commitment, he had to take out of the gendarmerie court files which will be photocopied for unknown recipients for probable blackmail purposes.
