Fact or myth? Bitter food lowers blood sugar levels

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN)–With diabetes myths rife, be wary of information that can cause your health to decline.

You may have heard that bitter food lowers blood sugar levels.

However, the UAE Ministry of Health and Community Protection clarified, through its official account on the Instagram website, that this information is just a myth and has no basis in truth.

In fact, bitter-tasting foods do not affect blood sugar levels, as the amount of carbohydrates consumed controls the amounts of glucose in the blood. It does not depend on the taste of the taste.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population revealed, on its official Facebook page, a leaflet explaining the different types of diabetes and its symptoms.

Here are the types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes

It occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, it completely stops secretion and the body needs a daily supply of insulin.

This type of diabetes cannot be avoided because it is basically an autoimmune disease and it comes without any prerequisites. It also mostly affects children and young adults.

  • Type 2 diabetes

It is caused either by a lack of insulin secretion from the pancreas or due to the ineffective use of insulin in the body.

It is usually the result of being overweight or obese, not doing any physical activity, or eating unhealthy food.

It is an increase in blood sugar levels above normal levels, which usually appears during weeks 24-28 of pregnancy, and disappears in 50% of women after childbirth.

  • secondary diabetes

It is caused by another factor that leads to high sugar in the body, such as adrenal gland tumors, pancreatectomy due to tumors, or chronic inflammation of the pancreas.

Here are the symptoms of diabetes:

  • blurred vision
  • heat in feet
  • Pain and numbness in the hands and feet
  • Frequent infections of the skin
  • frequent urination
  • Feeling tired, lethargic and stressed
  • delayed wound healing
  • Excessive thirst and hunger
  • Weight loss
