Age notably influences salary upwards, according to data from the Belgian statistics office, with an inflection point around 40 years old. However, this effect is mainly felt among employees. Thus, employees aged 60 and over earn 183% more than workers 20 years younger. Among workers, the wage gap is only 37%.

In terms of sector of activity, the petrochemical industry is the best paid branch of the economy, with an average monthly salary of 6,036 euros. The lowest salaries are paid in the hospitality sector, with an average amount of 2,731 euros. Accommodation and retail are also among the lowest paid sectors.

People who work in the center of the country are also more likely to have a high salary. The Brussels-Capital Region leads the pack, with an average monthly salary of 4,604 euros, exceeding the national average by 18%.

Finally, in the 30-34 age group, a full-time employed woman earns on average 0.8% less than a full-time employed man. Among workers over 40, the gap increases rapidly, reaching its maximum among workers aged 60 or over. In this group, women employed full-time earn on average 19% less than their male counterparts.
