A surprise gift of ‘couple hanbok’ to the Otani couple

As the opening game of the Major League Baseball held for the first time in Korea has come to an end, the Korean-style touching service of the five-star hotel where the ‘trillion won man’ MLB Shohei Otani (30, LA Dodgers) and his wife Mamiko Tanaka (28) stayed is becoming a hot topic.

The hotel where the Otani couple stayed in Korea was the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul Hotel. As it was like a honeymoon for a world-famous celebrity, welcoming the couple was reminiscent of Operation 007.

Paymond Hotel began preparations by forming a team reception task force one month before the LA Dodgers’ stay. The mission is to provide customized services that can satisfy major leaguers, including a light welcome ceremony, room service during their stay in Korea, and meal menus and catering. The key keyword was ‘promote Korea’.

The result of over a month of preparation led to the players’ exclamation of ‘wonderful’. The first thing that surprised the team, along with Ohtani, was the traditional Korean mother-of-pearl box. Inside the mother-of-pearl box were bakery products related to baseball along with the name of each major league player. Upon opening the door, the team was greeted with the most Korean welcome gift. Instead of common fruits and wine, traditional snacks such as hangwa (hangwa) were provided. The amenities that actively introduce Korean culture also attracted attention.

What we put the most effort into is the team’s diet. The reason why major leaguers kept saying ‘awesome’ was because of the customized special meal. Instead of the usual toast and egg dishes, breakfast featured Korean food such as bibimbap and bulgogi, which are synonymous with ‘Bapsim’. In particular, it was evaluated that the hotel showed outstanding consideration by providing specially prepared natto to Japanese players, including Otani.

What impressed the players the most was the surprise welcome ceremony prepared by the staff. The players and officials were invited to Mariposa & M29, Fairmont’s most famous observatory restaurant on the 29th floor, and an event was held where all hotel staff wore LA Dodgers uniforms and welcomed the players at Mariposa Restaurant.

The frugal ‘honeymoon room’ where Otani and his wife Mamiko Tanaka stayed is also a hot topic. The room where the Otani couple slept was known as the ‘Signature Suite’ of Fairmont Ambassador Seoul. This couple, who has emerged as an icon of frugality to the extent that they can watch from regular infield seats at baseball stadiums, stayed in a room one level higher than a regular room instead of Fairmont’s top-class suite, the ‘Penthouse’. The Signature Suite is about 1 million won more expensive than the deluxe room that ordinary people stay in.

This room includes access to breakfast, afternoon tea break, and evening cocktails at the Fairmont Gold Lounge.

Kim Ki-seop, CEO of the Fairmont Hotel, who is known to be a huge LA Dodgers fan, personally helped prepare a touching gift for the Ohtani couple, who were on their honeymoon. It is said that CEO Kim impressed the Otani couple by gifting them a hanbok specially custom-made by the hotel so that they could keep their honeymoon memories in Korea for a long time.

Fairmont is making every effort to provide the final Farewell service. As expected, the keyword is ‘promoting Korean traditional culture’.

To show support for the athletes, we plan to prepare a glass made of mother-of-pearl that can hold traditional Korean liquor, a Farewell gift consisting of a traditional Korean fan and a Yut game set, and special amenities in the room.

CEO Kim Ki-seop said, “It is difficult to reveal the exact schedule or scale due to security issues such as protecting customers’ personal information,” but added, “As state guests have visited several times, we did our best to impress the athletes through our rich experience in protocol.” .
