The mobile phone industry has been dancing around the idea of sustainability for years, but the efforts to make production more environmentally friendly – especially in view of the accumulation of electronic waste – seem, to say the least, like a report on April 1st: People remain skeptical as to whether this is really meant seriously. Plastic-free packaging, expanded software support and the elimination of power adapters in the scope of delivery are welcome initiatives, but at best they only scratch the surface of a huge problem that is often ignored. Especially when you compare these efforts with those of Fairphone, the only player in the industry that not only preaches sustainability, but has long since put it into practice.
