Fake on our plates – A profitable and risky business for the consumer

Spanish wine in Bordeaux bottles, tuna steaks manipulated to make them redder, slimming cures containing banned substances or even cheeses that seem to copy others… Fake foods are everywhere. more and more on our plates. Food fraud represents 30 billion euros in losses for the industry each year. For several months, our team has followed those who are fighting to disentangle fact from fiction. They are producers, business leaders or victims and have decided to tackle this scourge. Dominique Techer winemaker in Pomerol discovered huge trafficking in fake Spanish wines involving 5 million bottles. “If we can’t buy a bottle with confidence, I say our profession is really in danger!” He will fight during the trial which opens in Bordeaux and which – he hopes – will have dissuasive properties.
