The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, announced on Thursday the appointment of Bangladeshi General Fakhrul Ahsan to the post of Commander of MINURSO.

Fakhrul Ahsan succeeds Pakistani general Zia Ur Rehman, who will complete his mission at the end of March, said UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric during his daily press briefing.

Ahsan, who has over 34 years of experience, has served as Commandant of the Bangladesh Military Academy and as Director of Military Intelligence at his country’s army headquarters. He has also served in two peacekeeping missions, in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
