Waving national flags, with Celtic crosses or chanting anti-European slogans, tens of thousands of people marched in Warsaw on Saturday on the occasion of Independence Day, at the call of the Polish far right .

Between 40,000, according to the town hall, and up to 90,000 participants, according to a media count, took part in this march which took place less than a month after the legislative elections won by the pro-opposition. European.

The demonstrators brandished thousands of Polish flags in the national colors, white and red, but also flags with Celtic crosses, a symbol of the far right, or banners displaying anti-European slogans, including ‘Polexit’.

‘If further changes in the European treaties take place, Poland must be ready to leave the European Union,’ said the president of the All-Polish Youth, Marcin Kowalski. According to him, the upcoming treaty changes will transform the European Union into ‘a Euro-federalist collective farm run by the European Commission’.

‘We must defend the independence of Poland. It will not defend itself,’ declared Krzysztof Bosak, one of the leaders of the far-right Confederation party. Protesters also set off firecrackers and used smoke torches.

Government being formed

The nationalist populists of Law and Justice (PiS, in power), who supported the march in previous years, organized their own celebrations on the eve of Independence Day.

Almost a month after the legislative election, PiS and the pro-European opposition claim victory and aspire to form the new government.

The power camp won the greatest number of seats but without the possibility of forming a majority which amounts to a pro-European alliance.

Despite the electoral arithmetic, President Andrzej Duda chose to entrust the mission of forming a government to his PiS allies, and to entrust outgoing Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki with this task. The first session of the new parliament is due to be held on Monday.
