FARGO — Fargo North football head coach Adam Roland has resigned after 10 seasons leading the Spartans.

The school announced Roland’s resignation late Friday afternoon.

“It has been a great experience working with all the players and coaches,” Roland said in a news release. “There have been many experiences I will take with me and remember forever.”

No specific reason was given for the resignation. The Forum has contacted Roland for comment but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Roland took the reins of the North football program from former coach Kelly Kalina in 2014, compiling a record of 45-52 over 10 seasons. He was named both Eastern Dakota Conference and State Coach of the Year twice in 2021 and 2023.

In 2021, Roland coached the Spartans to a record of 7-4, North’s first winning season since 2008. That year, the Spartans secured the EDC championship and advanced to the Class 1A (now Class 2A) state semifinals.

North took a step further in 2022, making it back-to-back winning seasons with a mark of 7-5 and its first Dakota Bowl appearance since 2000. The Spartans ultimately fell to Jamestown in the 1A championship game.

This past season many argued was the best in school history. The Spartans took another stride again, going 12-0 and capping the year with its first state title since 2000 and third overall

with a 31-6 win over Grand Forks Central

in the Class 2A title game at Dakota Bowl XXXI.

In the last three seasons alone, the Spartans compiled a record of 26-9 with the program breaking 19 different team and many more individual records.

“Coach Roland was instrumental in building a strong football program, and his ability to develop relationships and his leadership qualities will be missed,” North activities director Dan Shultis said in the release. “The Spartan community was fortunate to have someone so dedicated to his craft and building the football program to where it is today.”

The school stated the search for its next football head coach will begin immediately.
