It was around 4:30 a.m. this Thursday morning when a car emerging from the Chaussée de la Liberation went straight into the Rhosnes, at the rue Deflière, in Orroir.

Precisely at the level of the bridge allowing to cross the brook and which is hardly visible for the motorists coming from the direction of Amougies and heading towards Orroir, because it is in a turning forming here almost a right angle.
It is a resident of Avelgem, aged 41, who was the victim of the accident mentioned above, this Thursday at dawn. The mayor of Mont-de-l’Enclus, Jean-Pierre Bourdeaud’Huy, explained to us that the vehicle turned over on its roof and that the passenger compartment was probably quickly submerged. The driver, who was alone on board, unfortunately did not survive.
A temporary barrier
It is not uncommon for the Pont de Rhosnes to be the scene of accidents and road trips. However, these facts do not always take on such a dramatic aspect. It would seem that we have to go back fifteen years to find the trace of another fatal accident at this place.
However, an impressive road trip of a school bus occurred there in December 2021. A slip which was then explained by the presence of a large patch of ice in this dangerous bend. The children and adults present on board the bus were however able to exit through the rear window of the vehicle.
Work had been undertaken after this accident to replace a portion of the damaged barriers. Other parts of these protections still had to be repaired, but the work had not yet been done, in particular because we had to wait for certain answers from the insurance companies, but also because the site had to be split into two. distinct phases, the barriers placed on the bridge being different from the guardrails placed on either side of the structure, at the edge of the road.
Be that as it may, this project should be carried out in the coming months.

We do not know the exact circumstances of the tragedy that occurred during the night from Wednesday to Thursday: discomfort, distraction or excessive speed?
An investigation should make it possible to establish them.
However, it is worth remembering that the speed is limited to 50 km/h on this dangerous axis and that drivers coming from Amougies are strongly advised to respect it, given the particular configuration of the bend at the height of the bridge. .
