An accident with fatal consequences occurred on Sunday morning in Tournai, during which a lady was hit by a car which then fled. The driver was identified and placed under arrest warrant, the Tournai public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday.
The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Sunday, shortly after 10:00 a.m., that a serious traffic accident had occurred along rue Montgoméry in Kain, in the entity of Tournai. A motorist driving at high speed hit a woman who was crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing. This lady was thrown to the ground, around ten meters from the point of impact. After stopping and getting out of his vehicle, the driver fled.
Cared for by emergency doctors, the victim was stabilized on site, then transferred in critical condition to the emergency department of the Union du ChWapi hospital center in Tournai. Aged around seventy, the victim died Monday in hospital.

Actively sought by the services of the Tournaisis police zone, the driver was arrested and the case was put under investigation. “The suspect was placed under arrest warrant and charged with involuntary manslaughter in the context of a traffic accident and hit-and-run with the circumstance that the accident caused the death of others,” specifies Tuesday Frédéric Bariseau, 1st deputy of the king’s prosecutor of Tournai-Mons.
