South African officials said a nitrate oxide gas leak killed 17 people.

The victims, including women and children, died as a result of gas inhalation in a slum settlement in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. Wednesday’s spill has been linked to illegal gold mining in the area.

Illegal gold miners, known locally as zama-zamas, often use nitric oxide gas to extract gold from soil stolen from abandoned mine shafts.

A leaky gas cylinder was found in the densely populated slum town of Angelo in Boksburg.

Emergency service officials fear more bodies will be found overnight as search and rescue teams continue their work.

A Mozambican woman living in South Africa told the BBC her husband died in the gas leak. She said she received a call from a neighbor telling her that her husband had passed away.

The tragedy comes just six months after a gas tanker explosion on Christmas Eve killed 41 people in the same town.
