Two children trapped on the 3rd floor of a burning apartment building were saved by their father and neighbors who held out a sheet to catch them last Tuesday.

The chaotic scene was captured by the body camera of a police officer who participated in the rescue held last Tuesday night in West Poeria, Illinois.

Although they were saved by jumping into the sheet, Kaleb Martin’s two daughters, aged 5 and 7, suffered first-degree burns.

The man said he was woken up by fire alarms shortly following falling asleep. When he opened the door, flames were raging in the hallway of the building.

He immediately kicked down a window to bring fresh air into the apartment. At the same time, police tried to join them, but the fire prevented them.

His fiancée Jessica was treated in intensive care because of her injuries, and will soon be discharged, reports local channel 25NEWS.

The fire reignited twice: the next day and then on Friday.

The man has not yet been able to assess the damage to his apartment. He went back there to collect his daughter’s scooters and bikes, the only things left in the garage.

Relatives of the family have started a crowdfunding campaign to help him and the 17 other families affected by the disaster.
