Father Leaves 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji to Continue Climb

A 48-year-old man was reprimanded by Japanese police after leaving his seven-year-old son alone for hours on Mount Fuji to continue climbing with his older son.

An Abandonment at Two Thousand Meters

The incident unfolded on the slopes of the mountain. According to reports from outlets like IOL, the father told the younger boy to wait after the child complained of exhaustion. Armed with only a soft drink and a snack, the seven-year-old was left unattended as the father pressed onward.

Mount Fuji is a volcanic summit. At approximately 07:30 local time on Thursday, mountain refuge staff discovered the boy sitting near the sixth station at over 2,000 meters of altitude, navigating fog and rain. They immediately alerted the authorities.

The Search and the Police Reprimand

While the child waited alone, the father had continued climbing. Police eventually located him at the eighth station, roughly a three-hour hike away from where he had left his son.

When the father returned to reclaim the boy, local law enforcement delivered a stern verbal rebuke. As reported by Japan Today and mirrored in coverage by Brasil em Folhas, a responding officer stated, “Mesmo que signifique desistir de subir a montanha juntos, abandonar uma criança é inaceitável”—emphasizing that even if it means giving up on the climb, abandoning a child is unacceptable. The father apologized and recognized that he took a “precipitada” (hasty) decision.
