A father who lost his only son in an accident put on his son’s socks and ran down the same path his son had run.
Song Hyo-soon (65) ran the 10km section of the Chosun Ilbo Chuncheon Marathon on the 29th with her son Byeong-chan’s college friends Oh Seok-jin (28) and Ahn Ji-hwan (28), and her son’s former co-worker Park Hye-ju (33). Song’s son, Byeongchan, passed away in an accident two years ago. He was 26 years old at the time. She is the only child and the youngest of one son and two daughters. After graduating from the London School of Economics, England, she was a bright talent who worked at a consulting company in Seoul. Song said she had high hopes for passing on the small business she runs to her son.
It is said that his son Byeongchan enjoyed running during his lifetime. Before leaving to study in England, his father and son used to run together from their home in Seocho-dong, Seoul to Seorae Village in Bangbae-dong. Byungchan used to recommend marathons to people around him, including his friends and coworkers. I met Chunma in 2019 and completed the half course.

Mr. Park, a co-worker who participated in the 2019 Chun Ma together with Byeong-chan, suggested to his father, Mr. Song, that he go to the Chun Ma together after the second anniversary memorial mass in August. I believed that it would be a more meaningful memorial if we ran together on the same road that Byeongchan ran. Mr. Song accepted the offer and ran that day, saying, “I wanted to meet my son at the Chuncheon Marathon, run with him, and see the same scenery as my son.” He was wearing the brown socks that his son had worn while running when he was alive. After completing the 10 km run in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 7 seconds, he shed tears and said, “I ran in Chuncheon with Byeongchan today,” and added, “I will come to the Chuncheon Marathon with my son every year until I can run.”
