This is one of the most celebrated days in the country and, in addition, it has two dates on which it is commemorated, one official and the other commercial, which coincides with a Sunday.

When is Father’s Day in Chile?

Father’s Day has an official date that is celebrated in Chile and this is June 19, as stipulated in Decree 1,110 of the year 1976, due to the high value that the family represents for the people of Chile.

However, as with Mother’s Day, the holiday has an official date and a commercial one, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, so this 2023 Father’s Day will be one day before than the official, that is, on sunday june 18.

What is the origin of Father’s Day?

The commemoration of Father’s Day was born in the United States. In 1909, during a Mother’s Day, the American citizen Sonora Smart Dodd he devised to commemorate his father, a veteran of the civil war of that country.

William Jackson Smart was a sergeant in the Union’s First Arkansas Light Artillery who participated in the United States Civil War. He was widowed when his wife, Ellen Victoria Cheek Smartgave birth to her sixth child, which caused her to take care of her entire family.

The Sonora initiative was supported in other cities and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge, decreed it as official. However, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson enacted the official father’s day.
