FC Bayern beat Viktoria Pilsen and entered the Champions League round of 16 – Leon Goretzka shines with a brace

After tough 0:5 defeat from a week ago in Munich, the Czech league leaders from Pilsen wanted to make amends in front of their home crowd. But it wasn’t supposed to get any better at first.

After Leroy Sané missed the early lead for the German record champions shortly after the kick-off (2nd), fellow striker Sadio Mané opened the scoring a few minutes later: After a quick one-two with Leon Goretzka, the Senegalese pushed the ball past the keeper from close range Jindrich Stanek in the lower left corner (10th).

Just four minutes later, Thomas Müller made it 2-0 from Bayern’s perspective. Sané had sent Kingsley Coman on the left, whereupon the Frenchman served Müller in the center with a flat pass (14th).

Bayern continued to play well, Viktoria had no access and, like in the first leg, was overwhelmed with the defensive work. In the middle of the first half, Sané passed a hoe on to Leon Goretzka, who gave Stanek no chance to defend himself from close range and increased the lead to 3-0 (25th). Shortly after the goal, Müller, who had previously been hit, left the field. Mathys Tel replaced him (28th).

Exactly ten minutes after the third goal, Goretzka made it 4-0 and celebrated his brace. The midfielder exploited a pass from Sané with a technically high-quality lob (35th). Substitute Tel even missed the big chance to make it 5-0 in the 43rd minute. Except for a double chance from Jhon Mosquera and Tomas Chory (30′) and a volley from a tight angle by Mosquera again (45′ + 1’s), the opponent didn’t record any significant scenes.

Pilsen coach Michal Bilek reacted to the weak performance and made three changes at the break. The changes promptly brought more momentum into the home side’s game. Shortly after the restart, Adam Vlkanova just missed the goal from 14 meters (47th). A good ten minutes later, Josip Stanisic brought Erik Jirka into play with an imprecise header in his own penalty area, but in the end he only hit the side netting (57′). Pilsen took control of the game and now wanted the consolation goal.

Ludek Pernica almost succeeded when, after a cross from Pavel Bucha, he headed Sven Ulreich in the skull from close range, who saved the zero with this involuntary brilliant save (60th) – but it was to come a few moments later. After a header from Mosquera, Vlaknova welded the ball into the lower left corner with a dropkick from 16 meters to make it 1: 4 (62nd). Bayern started to swim more and more and swallowed the next goal 15 minutes before the end by substitute Jan Kliment, who scored from the turn to make it 2: 4 (75th).

In direct return, substitute Ryan Gravenberch missed Munich’s fifth goal because Stanek brilliantly deflected the Dutchman’s shot from behind onto the crossbar. The second ball then landed at Tel, who also touched the crossbar with a flick (78′).

In the end, FC Bayern won 4-2 away, which made it perfect for the round of 16 of the Champions League.

The voices:

Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich): “I’m happy that I was able to score two goals – a nice snapshot. After the Dortmund game we were highly motivated in the dressing room today. The first half was a good step in the right direction. After half-time we have to play it more seriously, Of course, the two goals you conceded are annoying, but today we have to look at the positive things.”

Sven Ulreich (Bayern Munich): “We had good chances in the first half and we scored too. After the break we didn’t do enough and didn’t have the presence that we should have had. We gave Pilsen too many spaces in front of the defense, that has to be analyze. In the first half we found the interfaces again and again and created a lot of chances.”

The tweet about the game:

FC Bayern traveled to Pilsen with serious injury concerns, but laid the foundation for a successful evening with a strong early phase.

That was noticeable: Bavaria’s two faces

Bayern dominated the first section at will. The fast offensive forces always make excellent use of the half-spaces and tore large gaps in the Pilsen defense with well-timed deep runs. The hosts could not cope at all with the variability of Bayern between the rooms.

In the first part of the game, only Neuer representative Ulreich noticed negatively, who occasionally got his back team into trouble with inaccurate passes.

After the break, Bayern showed a different face. The second suit, which came on after a few changes, didn’t fit. Pilsen became more toxic and took control of the game. The reservists around Marcel Sabitzer, Gravenberch or Eric-Maxim Chupo-Moting could not recommend themselves due to poor performance.

The stats: 11

With the win over Viktoria Pilsen, Bayern celebrate their eleventh win in a row in the group stage of the Champions League. With this, FCB sets a new record! Previously, only Real Madrid and FC Barcelona had managed ten wins in a row.
