FC Bayern Munich gives away victory at TSG Hoffenheim: Müller, Sané and Gnabry miss great opportunities

In front of 26,500 spectators and in bright sunshine in the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim, Hoffenheim started strongly. After five minutes, Andrej Kramaric, whose contract extension until 2025 was announced shortly before kick-off, had the lead on the foot. However, the Croatian failed from six meters half-left to Manuel Neuer, before the follow-up shot – this time by Niklas Süle – was blocked (5th).

After ten minutes, the record champions got going. First, Oliver Baumann parried a volley from Serge Gnabry after a cross from Kingsley Coman (10′), before Kevin Vogt almost deflected a cross from Gnabry into his own goal (12′).

The guests were now becoming more and more dominant. However, a goal by Thomas Müller after preparatory work by Gnabry did not count due to the 32-year-old being offside (27th). On the other hand, Georginio Rutter missed the target from 13 meters with a half-right (28th).

A little later, Christoph Baumgartner did better. Kramaric served David Raum on the left in the penalty area, whose cross the Austrians pushed right over the line at the second post from four meters (32′).

Bayern was now challenged, but again had to accept a disallowed goal. It was Müller again, whose goal after Joshua Kimmich’s preparatory work did not count due to offside (42′). In injury time of the first half, however, Robert Lewandowski struck: A corner from Kimmich landed on the Pole’s head, who placed the ball under the bar from six meters away. Baumann was beaten (45+2).

The second half started with the visitors’ third offside hit. Müller’s attempt from eleven meters on the left was deflected by Lewandowski in the center into the left corner, but consequently didn’t count (46th).

Shortly thereafter, Leroy Sané missed the 2-1 twice. The national player initially twisted his weaker right foot after preparatory work from Müller from eight yards out (50′), a little later he forced Baumann to react strongly from 14 yards out (55′).

Hoffenheim was less conspicuous in the second half, but also had a great chance in the person of Kramaric. After preliminary work by Raum, the Croatian shot free-standing from 14 meters. His shot went too central, however, and Neuer was there (58′).

As a result, the record champions missed out on deciding the game despite numerous great chances. First, Gnabry hit the left post after a misunderstanding on the TSG defense from eight yards on the right (68th). Baumann made the next buck just a minute later, Jamal Musiala splashed in between, but only hit the side netting from four meters and an acute angle (69′).

After all, it was Müller who, after preparatory work by Sané, appeared half-right in front of the goal and took a flat shot. Baumann was already beaten, but Posch rushed in front of the line and cleared at the very last moment (73′).

The hosts themselves could have scored the “lucky punch” in the person of Kramaric, but the Croatian was unlucky with his direct acceptance from eleven meters (79th).

So it ended up being 1-1, which Bayern will probably be more annoyed about than TSG from Hoffenheim due to the numerous missed chances.

The voices:

Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich): “I think we had a few more chances. In the end, of course, it’s a bit disappointing that we didn’t go home with three points here. Luck wasn’t on our side today, even with the close offside situations that against we were decided.”

Julian Nagelsmann (Coach FC Bayern Munich): “For the fans, it was his very good game. To be honest, I’m very satisfied with the performance over long stretches. Then we lost patience a bit in pressing. Before Hoffenheim have the big chance, we really have to decide the game . But if I compare that with the games from three or four weeks ago, then I’m curiously happier. Even if it’s just one point.”

No penalty, no red card: Nagelsmann struggles with the referee’s performance

David Raum (TSG Hoffenheim): “It was a very nice game for the neutral spectator. There were chances for both sides, we presented ourselves well here. It goes back and forth, in the end we’re happy that we took a point here. Now about them Talking about the Champions League is too early.”

The tweet about the game:

Two offside goals by Thomas Müller were whistled.

That was noticeable: Hoffenheim’s offside trap works

FC Bayern hit the Hoffenheim goal three times from offside, and the goal was disallowed three times. In general, the players of the record champions were in the forbidden zone a total of seven times, more than ever this season. On the one hand, this speaks for the good communication in Hoffenheim’s back three, in which Stefan Posch, Florian Grillitsch and Kevin Vogt showed a good performance. On the other hand, this statistic also shows that Bayern were perhaps not completely fresh in their heads in their third game in seven days and so repeatedly started too early or stayed too long. In the end, despite 18 shots to nine, it was only enough for a 1-1 draw, the second in a row in the Bundesliga.

The stats: 50

With the game in Hoffenheim, Jamal Musiala now has 50 Bundesliga appearances under his belt, making him the youngest Bayern player to do so.
