Uli Hoeneß (70) was on the Austrian broadcaster “ServusTV” on Monday evening. The conversation at “Talk from Hangar-7” dragged on for an hour. A nice chat two days before Bayern’s Champions League Round of 16 in Salzburg. Then Hoeneß gets going…
When it came to the topic of play-offs to make the Bundesliga more exciting, Hoeneß countered Bayern boss Oliver Kahn (52). He finds the idea of the new DFL boss Donata Hopfen (45) “exciting”, says in the “kicker”: “We at FC Bayern are always open to new ideas.”
Hoeneß sees it very differently!
The ex-president: “That’s his opinion – it’s not mine. I find that ridiculous. In the Bundesliga, whoever is the best after 34 matchdays and who has gone through thick and thin with his team should win the championship. That’s just a law against Bayern Munich! That has nothing to do with tension.”
Hoeneß also tackles hops: “The new managing director of the DFL thinks day and night about how to break the dominance of FC Bayern. And that’s when they came up with this idea. There are no play-offs in any major league in the world, not in England, not in Spain, not in Italy, not in France.”
He rumbles on: “It’s just a law against Bavaria! If they get stuck with that, they decide that we can only play with ten men.”
Hoeneß has a fundamental problem with the play-offs: “There are knockout systems in the cup and in the Champions League, not in the championship. And if you still do semi-finals and finals at the end of the season when everyone is broken with the game plan that we still have anyway – I think that’s a funny idea!
After all: Hoeneß and Kahn agree on the analysis of Bayern’s 4-2 defeat in Bochum.
Hoeness: “I think the problem is that when our players open the newspaper, they always read that they are unbeatable. I heard that the atmosphere in the team is very good – maybe too good, there is not enough friction! We lost 5-0 in Augsburg, Bochum and Gladbach. Maybe only 75 or 50 percent is played. When it came down to it and against strong opponents, they pulled themselves together incredibly.”
Kahn: “The players know that a first half like in Bochum is not acceptable. Because we fell far short of our potential there.”
He calls for a different attitude: “That’s something we have to start with: that we have to work against the ball again with more discipline and passion. Otherwise, mistakes are immediately punished mercilessly – internationally even more so.”

Hoeneß also spoke on “ServusTV” about his former defense boss David Alaba (29/free transfer to Real Madrid), who Bayern could use right now!
The Honorary President: “David is the only player who has been calling the Hoeneß family on Christmas Eve for ten years or more and wishing them a Merry Christmas. We have a very good relationship! As a matter of fact it was very difficult when he left because we really wanted him to stay – but personally I have no problems with him at all.”
