FC Cologne Condemns Riots After Rhine Derby: Updates on Police Investigation and Support for Injured Stewards

1. FC Cologne has condemned the riots following the league derby against Bayer Leverkusen (0-2) on Sunday. Fans, stewards and police officers were injured. “Discrimination and violence are among the red lines that we repeatedly draw clearly when dealing with our fans,” FC managing director Philipp Türoff is quoted as saying in a statement on the homepage.

The club is “in contact with the injured stewards” and hopes “that everyone gets better quickly.” Türoff said: “We are also investigating the events and supporting the perpetrator-oriented investigation of the incidents by the police.”

During the Rhine derby and afterwards, the police surrounded around 200 suspected violent criminals from the 1.FC Cologne fan environment.

Police officers in riot gear guarded the suspected violent perpetrators until late into the evening. Emergency services had previously been attacked and pelted with bicycles, branches, bottles and pyrotechnics. The police are investigating ten men for serious breach of the peace. Two are in custody.

In the stadium there had already been fights between FC supporters and Leverkusen fans in the guest block in the upper tier during the game. A folder was knocked unconscious. He was taken to hospital seriously injured. The suspected perpetrator could still be identified on site. The police arrested him.

The police initially closed the most important street on the south side of the stadium to departing traffic and guarded the men, mostly dressed in black, with strong forces in riot gear.
