Yuck, yuck, what’s that floating in the water?

Picturesque beaches, blue bays, idyllic sandy coasts – this image of Mallorca is now clouded. The responsible water protection authority has noticed a drastic deterioration in the water quality.

The reason for this is an increase in faeces in the water, as reported by “Mallorca Magazin”.

In 2013, 93 percent of the water analyzes were rated “excellent”. In the past year, this only applied to 71 percent of the samples, according to the report by the water protection authority.

Brismar beach in Port d’Andratx and Portocolom beach have already been declared unsuitable for bathing during past surveys. In the meantime, apparently only the bathing area in Brismar is closed.

Only the neighboring island of Ibiza is more severely affected by faecal pollution.

The faeces in the water can trigger infectious diseases. The result is nausea, diarrhea and rashes.

In Mallorca, water samples are taken every 14 days. The seawater is examined, among other things, for the presence of the bacteria Escherichia coli and enterococci.

Both types of bacteria are found in sewage. Experts see the outdated and dilapidated sewage systems as the main reason why dirty water seeps into the Mediterranean Sea.
