Federal army is considering withdrawing from the crisis state of Mali

A decision should be made “in the near future”, there is no time pressure, said Defense Ministry spokesman Michael Bauer on Friday.

The mandate for the deployment of the UN blue helmets in Mali, which has existed since 2013, expired yesterday. Mali’s military government has called for the withdrawal of UN troops.

Two members of the armed forces are currently stationed with the UN mission MINUSMA in Mali’s capital, Bamako. In addition, four members of the armed forces are on the EU training mission EUTM in Mali. The Ministry of Defense emphasized that this was unaffected by the decision.

Mali’s military junta, which is working more closely with Russia, had demanded the immediate withdrawal of all 12,000 peacekeepers in mid-June. It could happen by the end of the year. The United Nations needs the consent of the host country for missions.
