Alain Berset does not wish to resign at the end of 2023
The Friborg socialist said he still has important projects to complete after his term as President of the Confederation.
Despite a low score in the election to the presidency of the Confederation and calls for resignation, Alain Berset intends to remain in the Federal Council after 2023. The Friborg socialist invokes important projects, which are far from over.
“I want to continue working beyond 2023 and move the files forward,” said Alain Berset, 50, in an interview broadcast on Wednesday by Blick. In 2023, he will be the dean of the Federal Council and will preside over the Confederation for the second time, but will remain the youngest of the ministers. “I’m still full of energy and I want to continue,” he adds.
The Minister of the Interior does not comment on the rumors, according to which, he could not have taken over the Department of Finance or that of Foreign Affairs on Friday during the redistribution of the departments, after the elections of Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and ‘Albert Rösti to the Federal Executive. The Federal Council must put together a team that is the best for the country, says Berset simply.
Health and second pillar
He says his enthusiasm for the Federal Department of the Interior (DFI) is still great, saying he is “very happy” there. “In the field of health, there are still many projects, such as the uniform financing of outpatient and hospital services,” he notes. He also points to two popular initiatives on health costs, accompanied by counter-projects, which are on hold.
In old-age provision, the reform of the second pillar and the improvement of the pensions of women and low-income people are still under discussion, continues the socialist, stressing that the project of the Council of States is very far from that of the Federal Council. “It will not be a walk in the park.”
As for the fears raised by the arrival of UDC Albert Rösti at the head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC), Alain Berset puts them into perspective. “A head of department certainly has a certain influence, but there is always an open debate afterwards in the government and in Parliament”. To abandon the chosen path of the energy turnaround, the entire Federal Council would have to change its mind, notes the Fribourgeois, who does not think this is realistic.
