Vienna (OTS) – Today, December 30, 2023, the preliminary performance of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert took place in the Great Hall of the Vienna Music Association in the presence of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. Traditionally, the balcony and gallery regions as well as standing room were intended for the Austrian Armed Forces.

“The Vienna Philharmonic has performed extensive works by the Strauss family and their contemporaries at the beginning of the year over many decades. These New Year’s concerts are not only very popular in the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, but have also achieved great notoriety and popularity both nationally and internationally through global television broadcasts, which now reach more than 90 countries. It is a great appreciation for our employees to be able to take part in this traditional event,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

Since December 31, 1952, the New Year’s Concert program has been previewed on New Year’s Eve as a New Year’s Eve concert. A second preview performance was scheduled for the first time on December 30, 1962. Until 1997, this was a closed event for members of the Austrian Armed Forces; some tickets have been sold since 1998. The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert will take place on January 1, 2024 under the direction of Maestro Christian Thielemann. Christian Thielemann has a particularly close and productive artistic partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic. He will now lead the prestigious concert event for the second time after 2019. The 2024 New Year’s Concert will be broadcast in over 90 countries worldwide and watched by millions of TV viewers.
