Federal Youth Representation: Clear no to household levy at the expense of young people

Only 11% of the young generation according to recent polls for household levy. The BJV rejects additional financial burdens and demands youth-appropriate formats and program content.

Vienna (OTS) – In the debate about the financing of the ORF, the Federal Youth Council (BJV) has already spoken out clearly against a household levy for young people. Current surveys for today and profil show that the majority of the population rejects a household levy, and among young people only 11% are in favor of one.

BJV chairman Julian Christian explains: “The current survey shows that a large proportion of young people reject an ORF household fee. Young people find the household levy model unfair. New ORF funding must not be at the expense of young people.”

In times when young people are massively burdened by inflation, there should not be any further fees. “Young people shouldn’t be saddled with additional financial burdens,” criticizes Christian.

In order to reach young people better, what is needed instead is a digital novella that addresses the needs of young people when it comes to media use. In addition, young people should be more involved in program design.

Regarding the current target for savings at ORF, Christian points out:

“It would now send the wrong signal to start cutting back on those programs that are aimed at children and young people.” In addition, the chairman warns against accelerating the trend towards precarious employment relationships, especially among young employees, through savings.

“We are fundamentally committed to the necessity of the constitutional mandate of broadcasting, but there is finally a need for the expansion of program content and formats suitable for young people in order to appeal to young people. Additional financial burdens are absolutely out of place,” Christian concludes.
