The Angolan Athletics Federation (FAA) presents, this Saturday, at a press conference, the list of foreign long distance runners who will attend the 67th edition of the traditional end-of-year race called São Silvestre, which takes place on the 31st of this month, in country’s capital.

The information was provided to this newspaper, this Monday, by the vice-president of the sport’s governing body, Jorge Cruz, who highlighted the confirmation of the following countries: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, Africa South, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Malawi, Somalia, Morocco, Gambia, Kenya and Ethiopia.

However, kits for runners registered in the event will begin to be delivered this Thursday. Bernardo João’s cast emphasizes that the delivery of the kits will take place until Saturday, and participants must bring their Identity Card.

The ten kilometer race, which is budgeted at 80 million Kwanzas, starts at 5pm, at Largo da Mutamba, passing through Serpa Pinto and Maianga squares, Avenida Revolución de Outubro, Prenda tunnel, Ho-Chi Minh and Largo das Heroínas.

Continue along Avenida Alameda Manuel Van-Dúnem, Avenida Comandante Valódia, Rua da Missão, Cirilo da Conceição, Avenida 4 de Fevereiro, Largo do Baleizão, Rua Manuel Fernando Caldeira and arrive at Estádio Municipal dos Coqueiros.

More than 2 thousand athletes confirmed for the event

More than two thousand and one hundred and three national and foreign participants are confirmed for the end-of-year event, according to a note from Tchaco Sports to which this newspaper had access.

This newspaper knows that athletes, in the federated, popular and Paralympic categories, have been intensifying their physical and mental components to be up to the task of the competition.

Meanwhile, Ernestina Paulino is optimistic about winning, but recognizes that it will be very difficult for her to win the competition due to the quality of her opponents.

It should be noted that the event has been held since 1954, and has already brought to Luanda some of the best runners in the world, namely Haile Gebrselassie in the 2011 edition and, in 2013, the five-time world champion of the Half Marathon, Zersenay Tadese, and Priscah Jeptoo, the female champion of the London and New York Marathon. Remember that the race did not take place in 2021, having been held in March 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
