The Jesuit priest, Felipe Berríos chose to decline the invitation made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Carlos Montes to be part of the government camp program.
This after the series of questions against him after learning – through a statement from the Jesuits – that he would lead the aforementioned program.
Last Saturday, consulted by ThirdMontes explained that “The idea is under construction and it is about a supraministerial team, which is in the process of conversation and which would be headed by him.”
However, this news generated noise within the conglomerate of Gabriel Boric’s government as a result of the series of questions weighing on the Jesuits as a result of cases of abuse against minors in said congregation.
This Sunday night, consulted on the subject, the spokesperson minister, Camila Vallejo, was emphatic in pointing out that “the President is the one who makes the nominations, not the Jesuits, with all the respect they deserve. Felipe Berríos has no position, no responsibility and he is not going to have it”. And that his designation would be evaluated. A similar position was expressed by the Segpres minister, Giorgio Jackson.
Thus, today, through a public statement, Berríos indicated that “Indeed, I received an invitation from the new Minister of Housing and Urbanism to participate in an advisory group whose mission would be to define a comprehensive policy in the face of the situation of the new camps.”
“I must clarify that We did not define with Minister Montes the assumption of an executive function, as has been mistakenly reported in the last few hours, since I will continue living and doing what I do in Antofagasta. I reported these conversations to my Provincial and it was deemed pertinent to inform the entire Society of Jesus through the internal letter, which unfortunately has been made public before agreeing with Minister Montes on how to materialize this collaboration”he added.
“Faced with this unexpected situation I have contacted Minister Montes to decline his invitation, thanking him for his courtesy and offering him my selfless cooperation from La Chimba, my place of work”Hill.
