In his attempt to control drug cultivation in Durango and Chihuahuaan area of northwestern Mexico, nestled in the Mexican Sierra Madre known as “The Golden Triangle”, had generated high rates of violence with kidnappings, extortion, clandestine burials and burning of businesses and homes, according to information from Mexican authorities at the time of his arrest.
