Fenyő Miklós Emlékművek a XIII. Kerületben: Emléktábla, Szobor és Névadó Javaslatok

Budapest’s 13th district is moving forward with a series of memorials to honor the legacy of the late singer-songwriter Fenyő Miklós, a beloved figure in Hungarian music. The plans, announced by district mayor Dr. Tóth József, include an emléktábla (memorial plaque), a musical bench, the naming of a street in his honor, and the creation of a life-size statue.

Fenyő Miklós, who passed away on January 31, 2026, had deep roots in the 13th district, having been born there in 1947. He attended the Kárpát utcai óvoda (kindergarten) and the Pannónia utcai általános iskola (elementary school), shaping his connection to the area that would later inspire much of his music. The initiatives aim to preserve the memory of this influential musician and strengthen the cultural identity of the district.

Mayor Tóth József emphasized that all memorial events will be coordinated with the artist’s family, ensuring their full agreement throughout the process. He also announced that he has initiated a request to the mayor of Budapest to posthumously award Fenyő Miklós the title of Budapest díszpolgára (honorary citizen of Budapest), a decision that will be made by the Fővárosi Közgyűlés (Budapest General Assembly).

Memorials Planned Throughout the Year

The district plans to unveil the emléktábla at Fenyő Miklós’s former residence on Zene Világnapja (World Music Day) this year. Perhaps the most prominent tribute will be the life-size statue, slated for unveiling in the spring of 2027, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of his birth.

Beyond the statue and plaque, the district is exploring the creation of a unique public space within Szent István park. The plan involves installing a bench not only bearing a commemorative plaque but also incorporating a musical element that evokes the artist’s work.

A further tribute under consideration is the naming of a section of the pedestrian walkway in Szent István park – between Pozsonyi út and Hollán Ernő utca – after Fenyő Miklós. According to local regulations, streets are typically named after individuals 25 years after their death. However, the district is investigating the possibility of a waiver or a fair procedure to expedite the process, contingent on the independent regulation of that section of the park, which currently shares a single land registry number.

“Ambassador of Angyalföld”

Dr. Tóth József previously described Fenyő Miklós as “an ambassador of Angyalföld” during a memorial event held by the district’s representative body. He further stated in a TV13 broadcast that Fenyő Miklós “united Újlipótváros and Angyalföld,” acknowledging that while the artist lived in Újlipótváros, his songs frequently referenced and captured the atmosphere of Angyalföld. A 2013 archival recording shown during a TV13 memorial program featured Fenyő Miklós reminiscing about his childhood and the changes he observed in the Szent István park area.

Fenyő Miklós was awarded the title of díszpolgára (honorary citizen) of the 13th district in 2004, and the local government considers him one of their own. His early musical endeavors began with the band Sztár, followed by the formation of Syconor in 1964 with friends from the Szent István park area. They frequently performed at the Bosch Klub, located at the corner of Balzac utca and Váci út. His lyrics often reflected the surroundings of his youth, with songs like “Angyalföldi Pálmafák” and “Az Angyalok földjén” vividly portraying the district’s ambiance.

The 13th district’s comprehensive approach to honoring Fenyő Miklós aims to preserve the memory of a defining figure in Hungarian popular music and reinforce the cultural identity of the area.

What comes next for these memorial plans will depend on the decisions of the Fővárosi Közgyűlés regarding the Budapest díszpolgára title and the successful navigation of the legal requirements for the street naming. The district is committed to ensuring that Fenyő Miklós’s legacy continues to resonate within the community he so deeply cherished.
