Mattia Binotto, Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 team representative, admits that the reliability issue of Ferrari’s F1 power unit is a “concern” for Maranello.
Charles Leclerc, who was the championship leader at the start of the sixth round of the Spanish Grand Prix, was retired and took the lead by Max Verstappen. Verstappen himself had retired in two of his first three races due to problems with the RB18’s fuel supply.
The culprit for Charles Leclerc’s retirement was a breakdown of the MGU-H and turbocharger. That is, Leclerc lost one each. F1 drivers are limited to using up to three internal combustion engines, turbochargers, MGU-H, and MGU-K per year.
But it was only Charles Leclerc that had the problem. Alfa Romeo F1’s Valtteri Bottas has already been installed on the third Ferrari turbocharger and MGU-H after seven races. Bottas will be penalized for a grid if any of the competitors needs a fourth.
Given that the 2022 season still has 15 races left, Mattia Binotto says reliability will be one of the main challenges to staying on top throughout the year.
“Reliability is always a concern,” Mattia Binotto told the media over the weekend in Monaco.
“And when something is happening, it’s never great. So it’s worrisome to us. We’re looking into what happened in Spain. Asked to clarify the cause behind Charles Leclerc’s retirement in Spain, Mattia Binotto chose to keep his mouth closed.

Given that Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen has retired twice, Mattia Binotto jokingly said he wants his rivals to face more problems.
