Engineering a vessel to cross open oceans on foils requires a radical rethinking of drag coefficients. When Ferrari’s Centro Stile began exploring marine concepts back in 2022 using the F80 and Luce as conceptual benchmarks, the core objective remained constant: generate maximum performance while drastically slashing aerodynamic and hydrodynamic resistance.

Lanzavecchia stated that the difference between the first electric car of their history and other vehicles of the Prancing Horse is that they usually seek aerodynamic downforce through wings and vertical appendages, accepting the resulting resistance. He noted that if consumption became an issue, they would typically use a larger tank because higher resistance requires more fuel. However, with the Luce, the goal was maximum autonomy and efficiency, leading them to work on minimizing that resistance—an approach he says is identical to the one used for the boat.
This minimalist approach to drag reduction dictates the vessel’s physical geometry. The exterior styling draws direct inspiration from the company’s hypercar portfolio. The hull flanks mirror styling cues from the Monza SP1 and SP2, while the coachroof on the deck borrows heavily from the 499P Hypercar. Capping off the aesthetic is the distinctive “long F” Ferrari logo emblazoned on the mainsail—a typographical asset recognized from Formula 1 monoplaces and the Pebble Beach-auctioned Daytona SP.
Architectural Breakdown and Development Timeline
At 30 meters of length, 20 meters of beam, and a towering 40-meter height, Hypersail dwarfs standard coastal racing craft. Project leader Enrico Voltolini noted that the structural load calculations far exceed typical America’s Cup specifications, reflecting the punishing nature of open-ocean wave states.
Unlike the America’s Cup AC75 class—which routinely foils over relatively flat water—Hypersail is engineered as the first full-foiling monohull built specifically for offshore competitions, occupying a design space somewhere between the hydrofoiling AC fleet and the 60-foot Imoca ocean-racing record holders.
Assembly is currently underway at a specialized yard near Pisa. While the primary hull structure is complete, technicians are systematically routing complex hydraulic and electrical systems through the interior—a fit-out phase slated to run through the end of the year.

- September 2026: Official unveiling of the professional sailing team tasked with helming the vessel through 2031.
