Ferry Runs Aground in Sunda Strait Amidst High Waves

Waves and rough seas forced a ferry to run aground in the waters near Bakauheni Harbor on Saturday night. The KMP Jagantara, carrying 370 passengers and 63 vehicles, was on its way from Bakauheni to Merak Harbor when the incident occurred around 9.20 P.M local time.

Rough Seas Lead to Grounding

South Lampung Police Chief, AKBP Yusriandi Yusrin, attributed the incident to strong winds and the limited visibility.

“The ship was swaying because the waves were high. Visibility decreased, and the current intensified, causing the ship to enter shallow water and run aground,” Yusrin told reporters on Sunday afternoon.

Crew members confirmed that the stormy conditions in the Sunda Strait played a significant role in the grounding.

Evacuations Underway, No Reports of Injuries

Immediately following the grounding, a team of experts and emergency responders launched a rescue operation. Alongside local authorities, they are working closely to ensure the safe return of all passengers and crew members. As of Sunday afternoon, no injuries have been reported.
