Fidelis New Energy has chosen Mason County, West Virginia as the location for its first net zero carbon hydrogen production facility. The facility will incorporate proprietary technologies from FidelisH2, a data center campus powered by clean hydrogen, and a greenhouse system that uses waste heat and captured CO2 for low-cost food production.
The project will consist of four phases, with each phase producing more than 500 metric tons of hydrogen per day with net zero carbon emissions. The approximate cost of each phase is $2 billion, excluding investments in data centers and greenhouses. The first phase is expected to start operating in 2028.
The zero-carbon hydrogen produced at the facility will be used for various purposes, including carbon-neutral hyperscale data centers, greenhouses, transportation, and steel production.
The West Virginia Department of Economic Development incentive package will allow additional geological assessment for carbon capture and storage. This will provide the necessary permits for carbon capture and storage activities, which will serve as the foundation for the clean hydrogen and carbon capture and storage industries in the state.
Fidelis has experience in the carbon capture and storage space and in the development of carbon storage assets in the United States and Europe. When all four phases of the Mountaineer GigaSystem are operational, approximately 10 million metric tons of CO2 per year will be stored, generating significant revenue for the state.
The project is expected to create employment opportunities, with 800 full-time jobs and 4,200 construction workers. It will also have a positive impact on the region’s economy, attracting additional business, industry and new technologies.
Fidelis has a number of patent-pending technologies for the energy transition, including FidelisH2, which enables the production of carbon-neutral hydrogen throughout its life cycle. The company’s suite of energy transition technologies also includes H2PowerCool and CO2PowerGrow. These technologies will be used in the Monarch Cloud Campus data centers, enabling carbon neutral data centers and supporting the decarbonization of food production through co-located greenhouses.
The selection of West Virginia for this project is a significant development for the state and will help shape the future of the region in terms of new industries and economic growth.
