“Field Shrink: The Role of Mental Health Support in Military Operations”

Rudi Réveillon is a former commander of the Belgian armed forces, retired since 2013. A mental operational advisor, he provided psychological support to soldiers in the field and took care of families who remained in the country.

The field shrink function was created in the 1990s. Before that, soldiers were not accompanied when they went on a mission. Psychological counselors had to struggle to be accepted at first. It was not in the customs of national defense to recognize that the military could “crack”.

“Yes, I’m going there to help others, but who’s going to help me?”

The soldiers could evacuate their anxiety somewhat by confiding in the shrink. He had to, as required by his function, lend himself to the daily listening to their torments. Rudi had to manage both the discomfort of the troops and the violence encountered on the ground. He told VEWS his secrets to survive physically but also mentally in these situations.
