ABU DHABI, 17th April, 2020 (WAM) — FIFA has confirmed that Argentina will host the U-20 World Youth Championship, which will be held from May 20 to June 11.
The decision comes after Indonesia was excluded from hosting the tournament, and the Argentine Football Association submitted an alternative bid to host instead of Indonesia.
A delegation from FIFA visited the proposed stadiums for the tournament and the related infrastructure, and the Argentine Football Association and the local authorities eventually signed the hosting agreement.
The Argentine national team is competing in the tournament instead of its Indonesian counterpart, and Argentina is considered the most successful country in the history of the World Youth Cup. Where it won the championship 6 times, the most recent was in 2007, and it also hosted the 2001 edition.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “FIFA is pleased to announce that Argentina will host this year’s edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where the home of world champions will open its doors to the stars of tomorrow. I would also like to thank the Argentine Football Association – especially its president, Claudio Tapia – and the authorities Government for its commitment to host this event.
After confirming the new host of the tournament, the official draw for the tournament will take place next Friday at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.
